When he commuted her sentence to life in prison last year, former Gov. Phil Bredesen acknowledged the abuse claims but gave a different reason for his decision to spare her life. He said prosecutors had agreed not to seek the death penalty if Owens pleaded guilty but then put her on trial when her co-defendant wouldn't accept the plea bargain.
At the time she was imprisoned, a life sentence meant serving 30 years. She was eligible to be released now because of good conduct.
"I'm looking forward to leading a quiet, private but productive life," Gaile Owens said in a written statement just before leaving the prison.
Owens walked out of the Tennessee Prison for Women at 9:30 a.m. Friday after spending years on death row for hiring a stranger to kill her husband in 1985 , reports CBS affiliate WTVF.

“It would have been really, really unrealistic if I had said I wanted to be the president of the University of Pennsylvania when I was in high school,” Dr. Gutmann responded.
“If you’re absolutely sure you want to go to Penn, don’t be so sure, (...) ,” she said, advising that students maintain a broad vision of their college and career (...) Gutmann was visiting Eleanor Roosevelt High School, a public school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan that draws teenagers from across New York City. Forty percent of the school’s students are first-generation Americans and 40 percent will be the first in their families to attend college.

“What if we have passions that are really, really unrealistic?” Brianna, a senior, asked. A slight girl, she said she wanted to be a professional hockey player.
“I had many of the same uncertainties that you have,” Dr. Gutmann said, telling the story of her father’s death during her junior year of high school; her initial plan to enroll in a teacher certification program; and her doctor’s encouragement that she think big and apply to Radcliffe College, which she wound up attending on scholarship.
The students — tentative at first, then all-out competing to be heard — raised their hands to ask follow-up questions about loans (“worth it for a top-notch school,” Dr. Gutmann said), about online learning (incomparable to the campus experience) and about just how big they should dream.
The audience, which had seemed somewhat skeptical to this point, now appeared to be warming to her. Their voices quieted to absolute silence, so much so that she was able to speak without a (...) young women now can dream of being leaders, and it won’t be a crazy dream like it was for me,” Dr. Gutmann responded.
