As the announcement of the verdict neared, (...) , my roommates and I were watching coverage of the trial on Italian-language T.V. Like it or not, Amanda Knox serves as a cautionary tale to those of us studying in a foreign country. When my friends and I finally figured out that Ms. Knox had been released, we began to debate whether she was guilty of murder or not.
The world had its eyes on a courtroom in Perugia, Italy, on Monday night, awaiting a verdict in the appeal trial of Amanda Knox, the young American woman accused of having killed her roommate during a semester abroad four years ago.
Lily Altavena, a junior at New York University and an intern this past summer on The Choice, is studying in Florence, Italy, this fall. This is the first in an occasional series of dispatches from abroad.

“She’s guilty,” one of my roommates guessed. No one was sure of the decision. The Daily Mail was reporting that Ms. Knox had been found guilty, while The Telegraph told us she had been freed. (Ms. Knox was actually cleared. Apparently, The Daily Mail was as confused as we were and published the wrong verdict.)

Still, some people in my program hadn’t even heard about what happened in Perugia. Thousands of students come to Italy to study each year. They have wonderful experiences and make it out in one piece. Moreover, Perugia isn’t as popular a spot for students to study in as Florence or Rome, unless their visit is timed with the city’s annual chocolate festival.
In the end, what happened to Amanda Knox hasn’t gravely affected us here. Students still party to a dangerous extent. Some still walk home alone, and many trust strangers too easily.
