The QX56 looks good from the back. It looks good from the side. The front end? Well, imagine if a hammerhead shark and a manatee mated and raised their mutant spawn in the Gowanus Canal. I can imagine a focus group where 2 percent of participants rated the QX front end "profoundly disturbing" and the other 98 percent turned to stone.




The QXs most helpful features, though, are the ones that apply to the simple challenge of seeing out of the thing. Visibility is always a problem in a full-size S.U.V. Youre sitting up there in the wheelhouse and your bumpers are somewhere down below the cloud ceiling, possibly in different counties. Youre always getting home and finding small items like A.T.M.s and hot-dog carts stuck in the wheel wells and wondering, "How long has that been there?"




You could probably live without the Theater Packages twin DVD screens, but the Technology Package should be considered mandatory. It includes Distance Control Assist, which uses lasers to scan the road ahead; if it concludes that youre on a collision course with a car or other obstacle, the accelerator pedal physically pushes back to clue you in to slow down. If youre still oblivious, the QX hits the brakes for you, which could be a real boon in mind-numbing stop-and-go traffic.






My favorite electronic helper, though, is Distance Control Assist, part of the $2,850 Technology Package. (The full-boat QX56 4WD that I drove included that option, as well as the $2,450 Theater Package and $6,950 Deluxe Touring Package, bringing the grand total to $72,170.)

The system really works; I drove the QX several hundred miles and didnt crash into a single thing. I attribute this success to Distance Control Assist, my own careful driving and the fact that the QX56s front-end styling physically repels most living things. One gentleman driving ahead of me took a look in his rearview mirror and promptly set a new land speed record for an octogenarian in a Buick Park Avenue.




Evidence that engineers worked hard to wring better economy include the QXs new 7-speed gearbox, which even includes a transmission-fluid warmer to reduce internal drag on start-up. The fuel economy still isnt great, but at least you get a highway number that starts with a "2."




This isnt a rebodied front-wheel-drive sedan, in the crossover vein. Its a body-on-frame truck that can tow 8,500 pounds. And in this class, Infiniti is the only company with new metal in the showrooms.




INFINITI has a new hybrid on the way. The M35h, due in the spring, is said to be the only vehicle to offer more than 350 horsepower along with a 30 mile per gallon economy rating on the highway. Thats an admirable achievement, and Im sure that plenty of Infiniti buyers will take note of the new hybrid as they stroll past it on their way to buy a new 400-horsepower, 5,850-pound QX56 4WD. As the sales charts prove, the death of the S.U.V. has been much exaggerated.






So perhaps the QX56 doesnt reinvent the luxury S.U.V. But car buyers vote with their wallets, and at the moment, the voters say that 400 horsepower and a semianiline interior is reinvention enough.




And, (...) , driving the QX56, you remember why. It is more than you need most of the time more power, more towing ability, more ground clearance, more sheer size but when you have occasion to call on its abilities, its supremely satisfying. This isnt a revelation on S.U.V. psychology, but when the forecast calls for a foot of snow or youve got six or seven people to cart around (or both, (...) , at once) its awfully convenient to have a mondo S.U.V. at your disposal.




Last year, Land Rover sales were up 21 percent over 2009. G.M.s full-size pickup sales were up 17 percent. The full-size Mercedes-Benz GL was up 32.8 percent. As long as a tank of fuel costs something less than a bucket of caviar, America is going to buy big trucks.




The QX doesnt rewrite the giant-S.U.V. formula. But, as the only new player on the field, it does have all the latest gear. Its 5.6-liter V-8 engine, now fitted with direct fuel injection and variable valve timing and lift, makes 413 pound-feet of torque in addition to its 400 horses. Thats roughly the same power as the Cadillac Escalade, but the Infinitis fuel economy rating 14 m.p.g. in town and 20 on the open road beats the Caddys by a couple of m.p.g. (The Escalade Hybrid, though, handily trumps them both.)




The seats with the Deluxe Touring Package are trimmed in something called semianiline leather, which is so soft that I imagine full aniline leather must feel like riding on the shoulders of an angel whos driving a hovercraft across a sea of warm marshmallow.






A clever tire-pressure monitor helps you figure out how much air to add when the tires are low, softly honking the horn when theyre aired up.




Frankly, Im surprised they had the time to deal with the QX, given Nissans product onslaught. The companys roster of all-new vehicles includes the electric Leaf (a daunting project all on its own), an all-new Quest minivan, the NV full-size commercial van, the Juke hipster hatchback, a Murano crossover convertible and the Infiniti M35 Hybrid across its lineup, Nissan has some of the most interesting new products on the market.




Apparently, though, buyers are unbothered by the styling, because the QX56 is selling at a healthy clip. From July through December of last year, sales shot up 182 percent from the period a year earlier. That statistic points to the dirty little not-so-secret of the auto industry: for all the growth of (relatively) efficient crossovers, for all the talk about electrics, we Americans still love our giant four-wheel-drives.




To address this problem, Infinitis Around View monitor uses multiple cameras to digitally stitch together a birds-eye view of the vehicle, http://www.saclouisvuitton4y.com , which is mighty useful in parking lots and other close quarters. A blind-spot-warning system lets you know when a Miata is swimming like a remora off your rear flank.

In redesigning the QX, Infiniti put a lot of thought into improving the day-to-day experience of owning a monster truck. A hydraulic system combats body roll, and the steering feels as if they let someone from the GT-R side of the company tune the rack. (This, Ive found, is a trend in Nissan trucks: unexpectedly direct steering.)




The previous QX was based on the Nissan Titan pickup and was built in Canton, Miss. The redesigned 2011 QX56 is produced in Kyushu, Japan, and is based on the Nissan Patrol the longtime international competitor of Infinitis parent company to the Toyota Land Cruiser. On other continents, you see Nissan Patrols used as desert police vehicles and warlord limousines. And, with apologies to the Titan, a rebadged despot-mobile is way more credible than a rebodied pickup. Stick some flags on the front fenders and youre halfway to running your own banana republic. Or, in the case of Americans actual S.U.V. assignments, (...) , running to Banana Republic.
